Physical
Therapy Basics
Physical therapy is a profession that is designed to help those with injuries or disabilities recover and ease the pain of physical symptoms. There are various types of sub-categories of physical therapy that differentiate specialties within the field. The overall goal of physical therapy is to provide individuals who have been either injured or disease stricken with a better lifestyle. Physical therapy can also help a person to gain their independence because as their health and strength improves, they no longer have to rely on others for help in carrying out everyday activities. Orthopedic Therapy Orthopedic therapy is designed to help those who suffer from injuries or problems associated with the joints and musculoskeletal system. Many of these problems are caused by sports related injuries, arthritis, or amputation procedures. Strength training is utilized along with electrical stimulation and temperature treatments to help those who have problems with their tendons, muscles, joints, bones, or ligaments. Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Therapy This type of therapy is given to patients post surgery who have had heart problems or pulmonary difficulties. The most common reasons for undergoing cardiovascular or pulmonary therapy include heart attacks, post coronary bypass surgery, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and pulmonary fibrosis. Neurological Therapy This type of therapy helps individuals who have disorders or diseases such as brain injuries, cerebral palsy, multiple sclerosis, Alzheimer's, Parkinson's disease, or spinal cord injury. These patients typically suffer from difficulty maintaining balance, vision problems, and poor muscle control. Geriatric Therapy This therapy helps older individuals who have lost strength and coordination due to aging. Frequently, these elderly individuals have experienced falls or other circumstances that have caused them to be in need of physical therapy. Surgeries such as hip replacements can cause the out patient to need therapy and is a typical reason for a person to need geriatric care.
